Vesicaria dubyana or Java moss is a plant native to freshwater Southeast Asian countries, including the island of Java, which has given its name. It is very commonly used in freshwater aquariums, but can also be used in salt water aquariums
All species sold under the name "Java Moss" share certain characteristics. They have no root, but can easily adhere to many surfaces including trocos, rocks, gravel and even glass and power equipment in the aquarium. The plant is very easy to care because they do not need gravel, fertilizer, and bright lights. Neither is very picky about the values of pH or water hardness. These features, coupled with the fact that the plant is aesthetically pleasing, have made the Java moss favorite choice of many aquarists.
Reproduction of this plant both in nature and in captivity is primarily by division.
Due to the fact that the Java moss forms a complex network of branches and wires, is a very useful plant to protect small fish, including newborns, other larger than they can devour.
